Hoover City Schools proposes 2015-2016 academic calendar

HOOVER—Hoover City Schools revealed a proposed calendar for the 2015-2016 academic year during a Feb. 9 Board of Education meeting.
Melody Greene, Hoover City Schools central office staff member, presented the proposed calendar to the Board of Education. Greene explained the “calendar committee worked diligently” to accommodate suggested changes to the draft of the 2015-2016 calendar.
Due to voiced concerns about the “early start date” of the school year, students will begin the 2015-2016 academic year on Thursday, Aug. 13, according to the proposed calendar, Greene explained.
The proposed calendar consists of 180 instructional days for students and has 10 scheduled school holidays, including Labor Day, Veterans Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, and Memorial Day.
Following positive feedback from the school community, Greene said the proposed calendar allocates a week off of classes for Thanksgiving, Nov. 23-27.
The first semester concludes on Dec. 18, and winter vacation would be from Dec. 21- Jan. 1, 2016. Students would return for the second semester on Jan. 4, 2016.
Hoover City Schools’ proposed spring vacation is from March 28, 2016 to April 1, 2016.
Spain Park High School graduation would be on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, and Hoover High School seniors would graduate on Thursday, May 19, 2016. All other students are proposed to conclude the academic year on Thursday, May 26, 2016.
The draft of the calendar will be available on the School System’s website, Hoovercityschools.net. Parents and the school community will the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed calendar.
Greene said suggestions from parents and the community will be taken into account, and estimated a calendar will be ready for the Board of Education’s approval at their meeting on March 9.
