ISS boys advance past Holy Spirit

INDIAN SPRINGS –Indian Springs School’s boys soccer team reached the 20-win mark for the season and advanced to the second round of the Class 1A-3A state playoffs with a 2-0 victory over visiting Holy Spirit on Tuesday, May 2.

With the win, Indian Springs (20-2) advances to play Montgomery Academy (10-7-7) in the second round of the playoffs.

The second-round game will also be played at Ray Woodard Field on the ISS campus, at 7 p.m.

Montgomery Academy defeated Cottage Hill, 2-1, in its first-round game.

On May 2, Donald Wilson started the scoring with a bending shot over the head of the Holy Spirit goalkeeper, who had already made a couple of nice saves, with about 20 minutes on the clock in the first half.

Springs then missed on some opportunities to extend its lead, including a corner kick and a feed from Jim Tozzi that was kicked wide left with about four minutes until halftime.

Justin Chapman worked hard to free himself for a shot on goal, but the Holy Spirit goalkeeper made the save.

With 2:34 on the clock in the first half, ISS made it 2-0 when a corner kick by Patrick McGuire was headed in by Chapman.

The Indian Springs defense kept the pressure on the visitors in the second half, allowing few threats and no goals as the clock ran out.
